What distinguishes Windmill Hill from other custom home builders in the Northern Virginia/D.C. area?

As a boutique design-build firm the owners are involved in the process from the beginning, often beginning with the acquisition of the land or the property. We forge true partnerships with our clients which helps us understand their functional needs and their design aesthetic resulting in a beautiful custom home.

The design doesn’t stop once the plans are complete. We do frequent on-site walk-throughs during the construction with our clients and our architect to determine interior details such as unique places for built-ins and areas to add interesting elements to enhance the character such walls covered in barn siding or adding faux beams wrapped in the same barn siding. It gives the clients an opportunity to continue to evolve the process and create a unique and inspiring home.Windmill Hill 3 - Cochran's Lumber - Reclaimed Barn Wood and Wide Plank Wood Flooring

Windmill Hill recently supported the Gary Sinise Foundation, which builds specially adapted smart homes for America’s severely wounded veterans. Please tell us about the project, the home in which you are building, and how our reclaimed barn siding will be used in the home.

We are honored to be supporting a Foundation that does so much for our Nation’s heroes including building smart homes through their R.I.S.E. (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment) program. Windmill Hill donated all of its design-build expertise to manage the construction of a one-story home for a local Veteran. As with all our projects, we partnered directly with the Veteran to ensure the home not only works for him but is beautiful and fits his vision for his dream home. When building new construction one of our goals is to add character. In this home, we built a stunning vaulted great room with barn siding wrapped beams running throughout the space. This gives the room a rustic and warm feel. We lined the powder room wall in barn siding to add greater interest to a small space. All of this material was generously donated by Cochran’s and adds great interest.

Why have you selected Cochran’s for past projects? What distinguishes our millwork from other providers?

Windmill Hill has used Cochran’s products in all of our homes over the past four years. The quality is superior and the products beautiful. The barn siding always have the perfect amount of character. The walnut island tops we’ve installed are always meticulously crafted.Windmill Hill 2 - Cochran's Lumber Kitchen Reclaimed Flooring
