The Cochran’s Process: De-nailing and Cleaning

Scroll

Welcome to our video series on the manufacturing process of reclaimed wood flooring! We are proud to complete every stage of the process in Berryville, Virginia, and believe that the care we take in manufacturing produces a superior product.

In this series, we will be taking a detailed look at how reclaimed wood is sourced, processed, and transformed into beautiful and durable flooring for homes and businesses. We will explore the different techniques used to bring out the natural character and patina of the wood, as well as the modern technologies used to ensure the stability and longevity of the final product. Whether you’re a homeowner, contractor, or simply interested in sustainable building materials, this series is sure to provide valuable insights into the world of reclaimed wood flooring.

Removal

The first step in our process is de-nailing and cleaning the wood. We carefully go over each piece, looking for any nails or other fastening objects lodged in the wood. This primarily requires a real person, rather than machines to catch every bit of unwanted material. A handheld metal detector is a useful tool to find anything our eyes and hands don’t pick up on the first pass.

There are always some risks involved at this stage and safety googles, gloves, and closed toe shoes are critical to ensure safety. Splinters and sharp materials can post a real hazard as we work to remove unwanted objects.

Beyond nails, there could be any number of spikes or hardware left in the wood. It’s not uncommon for us to find old bullets and other projectiles lodged in the wood. We’ve even found bullets left over from the civil war!

Why Go Through The Trouble?

As exciting as it would be to have a piece of history in your floorboards, here at Cochran’s Lumber we take a lot of care to remove anything stuck in the wood. If we left them lodged inside, it would wreak havoc on our machinery. Our machines are an integral part of our processes and we want to take care of them as well as we can.

When everything is removed from the material we are free to move on to our next steps. Stay tuned for more in-depth information on the amazing work behind our beautiful reclaimed flooring!
