In this series, we will be taking a detailed look at how reclaimed wood is sourced, processed, and transformed into beautiful and durable flooring for homes and businesses. We will explore the different techniques used to bring out the natural character and patina of the wood, as well as the modern technologies used to ensure the stability and longevity of the final product. Whether you’re a homeowner, contractor, or simply interested in sustainable building materials, this series is sure to provide valuable insights into the world of reclaimed wood flooring.

Sourcing The Material

You may know that reclaimed wood products are made from “old wood” instead of cutting down more trees, but where does the reclaimed wood really come from?

At Cochran’s Lumber, we get our wood from a wide range of sources. The most common origin of our reclaimed hardwood flooring is weathered barns that sit unused and need to be torn down to make way for newer structures.

While we do get a lot of our wood from old barns, there are a variety of other sources we draw from. Structures such as fencing, agricultural buildings, and other weathered wood construction can all be given new life. We also source from historic urban areas.

Old factories or textile mills are a great source of wood. The patina and age developed over hundreds of years is difficult to reproduce in new wood and offers an excellent way to repurpose otherwise antiquated timber.

Who Does the Demos?

Every site requires a skilled team to carefully disassemble the structure while preserving the integrity of usable materials. At Cochran’s, it’s important to begin every reclaimed wood floorboard with the highest quality material.

We rely on an experienced demo team who can identify usable materials at the job site, and ensure it arrives at the shop in great shape. We have trusted, working relationships with demo partners that adhere to our standards.
